Panning for information in learning logs: current practices and ways forward

May 23, 2024, Guest Lecture by Prof. Jelena Jovanovic.

The widespread use of digital learning systems and tools has opened up opportunities for collecting and analyzing data about user (learner, teacher) interaction with a variety of learning resources and activities, with the ultimate objective of better understanding learning and advancing both learning outcomes and the overall learning experience. This motivated the development of the Learning Analytics research field and the use of information derived from learning logs for evidence-based decision making in a variety of educational settings.

Learning log data, as a ‘byproduct’ of learning activities in digital learning settings, has obvious advantages of easy and cheap collection, without disturbance of the learning process and its actors. However, the use of learning logs is associated with specific challenges of data (pre-)processing and transformation into meaningful indicators of relevant learning constructs. Examples of such challenges include splitting learning event sequences into learning sessions, temporal alignment of events from distinct sources or dealing with instantaneous events. Likewise, interpretation of patterns identified in learning logs often requires making certain assumptions about the learning process, thus incurring a level of subjectivity.

This talk will give an overview of typical uses of log data in Learning Analytics, current practices in dealing with distinct challenges that characterize analytics of learning logs, as well as potential directions for overcoming and / or avoiding such challenges.
