With the Observer Research Tool, trainee teachers can practice observing and assessing lessons professionally and train their pedagogical-psychological skills. They use the Observer Tool to evaluate filmed lesson scenes and can then compare their assessments with those of experts.
Target group
Student Teachers, Teacher Educators, Teachers.
Vision
The Observer project investigates the structure and development of prospective teachers’ professional perceptions of teaching. A standardized and valid instrument was developed as the Observer tool to map this systematically. Teacher trainees are the target group, as it is assumed that the professional perception of teaching can be promoted early in a teacher’s career and later in their teaching skills.
Mission
To contextualize the professional perception of teaching, the project used video clips of lessons in which effective teaching components can be identified: Goal orientation, learning support, and learning atmosphere. In addition, a standardized rating format was developed to evaluate the video clips that examined knowledge-based reasoning skills of the teacher students. The tool was embedded in an online learning environment. The total processing time in Observer is around 90 minutes, so it can be used as part of a university course.
