TUMTutor

TUMTutor is a TUM-based platform that allows students to engage with lectures anonymously and participate in quiz-based learning. Through this system, students can ask questions and take quizzes, while lecturers can monitor the questions being asked and identify which areas of content may need further clarification. This feedback loop enables lecturers to address misunderstandings or difficult topics quickly.

Currently, TUMTutor supports its docents by offering free access to the system, curating content, and incorporating student feedback into future lessons. This student-focused, yet docent-centered approach ensures that the system continually improves, fostering an interactive and responsive learning environment.

Originally created as part of a software practical course at TUM and further developed by five students, TUMTutor was officially launched at TUM in mid-November. Since then, it has gained almost 4.000 users who have completed more than 100.000 quizzes and engaged in over 50.000 chat interactions.

Project Outline

The demand from students is enormous; however, it is not yet clear whether the system leads to more effective learning. To explore whether the system leads to more effective learning, the accompanying research project AIffectiviness was launched in March 2025 under the leadership of the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation (bidt).

The effectiveness of selected courses (five to ten courses per institution) will be analyzed together with five Universities (Augsburg, Bayreuth, LMU Munich, Nürnberg, TUM Munich), four Universities of Applied Sciences (Amberg-Weiden, Aschaffenburg, Rosenheim, Weihenstephan-Triesdorf), and the Bavarian Virtual University (vhb).
