MatheLotse is an AI-supported learning tool designed to help primary school students develop effective strategies for solving mathematical word problems. Instead of focusing only on whether a final answer is correct, MatheLotse guides learners through the problem-solving process and helps make their mathematical thinking visible.

Students can work on word problems with different levels of difficulty, arithmetic operations, and real-world contexts such as money, length, and weight. They can also enter or upload their own word problems. During problem solving, MatheLotse provides structured support through visualizations, step-by-step guidance, and AI-based hints that respond to learners’ difficulties and questions.

The central goal is not simply to help children arrive at the correct solution, but to support the development of problem-solving strategies that they can increasingly apply independently. MatheLotse is currently being developed as a research prototype at the Chair for Human-Centered Technologies for Learning at TUM. The prototype is already functional and is being prepared for classroom-based piloting with primary school students.
