Designing for Learning in the Age of AI: From Robotics and Making to Generative AI

On 13 August, we are pleased to welcome Prof. Dr Andri Ioannou from the Cyprus University of Technology.

Abstract

Digital transformation is reshaping how and where we learn, and generative AI is accelerating the shift. But what does it take to design technology-rich environments that keep learners thinking, creating, and learning collaboratively, rather than merely consuming? Drawing on more than a decade of design-based research in real classrooms — from educational robotics to STEAM-through-Making — this talk demonstrates what a design-for-learning stance offers as AI moves from novelty to everyday practice, and argues that meaningful change comes not from the next innovative tool or technology but from incremental, evidence-informed design that humanizes learning.

Guest Biography

Dr. Andri Ioannou is a Professor of Learning Design and Technology in the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) and leads the Research Group in Educational Technologies at CYENS Centre of Excellence (EdMedia), an extension of  CUT’s Cyprus Interaction Lab. Her work spans the design and evaluation of technology-enhanced learning environments, 21st-century skills, technology integration across all levels of education, digital transformation and, more recently, the use of generative AI in education. She has published extensively in leading educational-technology journals and contributes to numerous European research projects. Her research offers evidence-informed insights into designing for learning across diverse educational contexts and its impact on how students think, create, and learn collaboratively.
